Knowledge of the structures of the orofacial region from the macroscopic scale to the molecular level and pathologic changes to those structures enables practitioners to successfully treat patients or seek treatment options. This book presents the structural biologic foundations underpinning dental and oral medicine. Beginning with an overview of the anatomy of the mouth and moving on to the evolution of the oral structures and pre- and postnatal development of the oral cavity, related facial structures, and the teeth, this book describes each part of the orofacial region in terms of its morphology, tissue structure, cellular properties, and development. Functioning as both a textbook for dental students and a reference manual for experienced clinicians, this compendium of the structural biologic foundations of clinical work in dental and oral medicine allows practitioners to integrate current research in molecular biology into a solid framework of knowledge.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ralf J. Radlanski studied dentistry and medicine in Göttingen and Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. He subsequently completed his scientific training in anatomy and his specialist training in orthodontics at the University of Göttingen, where he received his habilitation from the Faculty of Medicine in 1989. From 1992 until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 2024, he was Professor and Director of the Department of Oral Structural and Developmental Biology at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. He has also held visiting professorships at international universities and continues to work as an orthodontist and lecturer in orthodontic continuing education. His main research interests include craniofacial morphogenesis, oral structural and developmental biology, and the biological foundations of orthodontics. He is the author of numerous scientific publications, book chapters, and textbooks and serves as President of the EurAsian Association of Orthodontists and the German Association for Aligner Orthodontics.
