People now live longer and have higher expectations for health and quality of life than they did in previous generations, and demographic shifts have occurred in recent decades leaving more older people than younger. These shifts have brought new demands to implant dentistry and practitioners, who now see elderly patients routinely in practice. Because of their age, these patients are subject to certain limitations and often require special dental care, especially patients in ailing condition. This volume addresses the situation and needs of the elderly patient, from systemic changes and physical and mental limitations to considerations of quality of life. Twelve clinical cases demonstrate solutions for various clinical situations, including treatment of an Alzheimer patient, rehabilitation of a patient with osteoarthritis, treatment sequencing for full-arch removable dental prostheses, flapless guided surgery for bar-supported overdentures, and minimally invasive treatment of a patient in her 90s with severe peri-implantitis, among others.

Prof Wismeijer studied dentistry at the College of Dental Science, Radboud University of Nijmegen, Netherlands from 1979 to 1984. After graduating, he joined the Department of Oral Function and Prosthetic Dentistry and worked in the section of Special Dental Care and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. He received his PhD in 1996 on the subject of overdentures on dental implants: The Breda Implant Overdenture Study. From 1985 to 2006, he worked at the Amphia Teaching Hospital in Breda, Netherlands in the Department of Oral Surgery and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. In 1985, he started a general dental practice, which since 1990 has been a referral practice for Oral Implantology. He is a past-president of the Dutch Prosthodontic Association and the Dutch Association for Gnathology. Prof Wismeijer has been an ITI fellow since 1993 and has served as a member of the Dutch ITI Education Core Group for 8 years. From 2011 to 2015 he was a member of the ITI Research Committee. In 2013, he was elected to the ITI Board of Directors as Member at Large, and in 2015 he was elected Chairman of the ITI Education Committee. In 2006, Prof Wismeijer accepted the position of Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral Implantology and Prosthetic Dentistry at ACTA Amsterdam, which he combined with his referral practice. The research areas in his department were focused on CAD/CAM treatment optimization, digital dentistry, treatment evaluation and workflow, implant surface and bone substitute optimization, peri-implantitis, 3D printing in dentistry, and the evaluation of different implant-based treatment modalities. As a principal promotor, he has successfully supervised 25 PhD students. In January 2020, he stopped working at ACTA.

Stephen graduated BDS (Malaya) in 1983, MDSc (Melbourne) in 1987 and completed a PhD at the University of Melbourne in 2008. He was awarded Fellowship by examination of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (FRACDS) in 1988 (KG Sutherland Prize). He holds the position of Clinical Associate Professor at The School of Dentistry, The University of Melbourne. Stephen’s clinical and scientific interests are in the field of periodontal tissue regeneration, bone grafting and dental implants. He has published over 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals, authored 2 textbooks and contributed chapters to 6 textbooks. Stephen is president-elect of the ITI (International Team for Implantology), an international not-for-profit academic organization in the field of dental implantology with over 15,000 members worldwide in over 100 countries. He has served as chairman of the ITI Education Committee and is currently a member of the ITI Board of Directors. In Australia, he has contributed significantly to local academic and professional associations, having previously served as chairman of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists (ANZAP), Australasian Osseointegration Society (AOS) and Australian Society of Periodontology (ASP). He was awarded honorary life membership of the Australasian Osseointegration Society (AOS) for services to the organization.

Daniel Buser, DDS, Prof em Dr med dent, is one of the most experienced international implant surgeons, with 35 years of surgical experience. He is past professor and chairman in the Department of Oral Surgery at the University of Bern in Switzerland and past president of the European Association for Osseointegration, the Swiss Society of Oral Implantology, the Swiss Society of Oral Surgery and Stomatology, and the International Team for Implantology (ITI). He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the ITI Honorary Fellowship and the Morton Amsterdam Award. He has authored and coauthored over 400 publications and is editor of 30 Years of Guided Bone Regeneration (Quintessence, 2021), which was recently published in its third edition. Dr Buser is cofounder of the Buser & Sculean Academy, which offers continuing education courses in periodontology and implant dentistry, and lectures nationally and internationally.
