Goal:

The main goal is to define a systematic and evidence based treatment approach, in simple as well as more complex dental rehabilitations, with the focus on defect oriented preparations and minimally invasive treatment strategies.

In this lecture you will learn:

  • Case analysis and definition of treatment goals
  • Selection of the ideal type of restoration and restorative material
  • Minimally invasive tooth preparations
  • Adhesive cementation

The lecture will present a concept for the choice of type of reconstruction and material for high aesthetic outcomes. Recently, an increasing use of ceramic materials for the fabrication of dental reconstructions can be observed. Advantages of all-ceramic materials over the traditional metal-ceramics include their tooth resembling colour and the enamel-like translucency.

The main limitation of ceramics is their brittleness leading to a risk for fracture of the reconstruction during clinical service. In order to reduce this risk, ceramics with increased stability were developed. Especially the high-strength ceramic zirconia seems to have a lot of potential to be applied as an alternative to metal.

Several clinical studies showed promising results of zirconia based tooth and implant reconstructions. For the processing of zirconia numerous computer-aided manufacturing procedures are available today. Due to the high number of restorative possibilities, the choice of the “ideal” material is getting more and more complex.

Learning objectives:

  • Learn and understand the value of conventional and digital diagnostics
  • Learn about new restorative options, their possibilities and limitations
  • Learn to select restorative options for predictable white and pink aesthetic

Day outline

Part 1: Conventional and digital diagnostics and comprehensive treatment planning

Part 2: Minimally-invasive restorations – veneers and onlays vs. full crowns

Part 3: Minimally-invasive replacement of teeth – resin bonded bridges

Part 4: Interactive treatment planning session
